Blog Announcement & Moving in 3D tutorial

Quick alert: We’re taking Living in Layers to a daily format! Add to that the scrumptiolicious (I’m sure that’s a word somewhere) stylings of Corey Barker, and together we’re baking up all sorts of Adobe cookery..

I really did run out of cooking references there. Anyway, I wanted to let all of you know about the change.

Now that it’s off my chest: I got a couple of emails concerning the moving around of 3D objects inside of Photoshop CS3 Extended, I figured I would just pass the information along — as well as tell you about some goodies you might not even know you have.

When you open a 3D object in Photoshop, you’ll notice that there is an icon on the layer that lets you know that it is a 3D layer. Double-clicking on that icon will bring up some controls on the tool options window that will let you control rotation, slide, scale, and so forth. The video below (no sound) goes through double-clicking on the beetle layer and moving step by step through the controls in 3D.

If you’re working a lot in 3D, you are probably going to be using something like the SpaceNavigator by 3DConnexion.

The best way to describe it is kind of like a scrubber wheel/joystick combo. It’s pretty heavy, which is good because it requires you to pull, push, tilt, and drag the black control around. It took me a little bit of time to get used to the motions with my left hand (you’re supposed to keep your right hand on your mouse.. left to move).

After I got the hang of it, I found that it’s actually quite neat to play around with. Check out the same video with the space navigator:

If you’re working on a lot of 3D stuff, the Space Navigator will work for you. It rocks for things like Google Earth, but unfortunately, according to their website, support for OSX seems limited..

The beetle? Oh yeah — Go back and check out your Adobe discs! The last disc is a goodies disc that almost everyone ignores, yet it includes TONS of stuff to use in Photoshop, including 31 different 3D models!

Send me a cool version of your beetle if you’d like. Have fun!
