The squinty-eye technique is great for determining the color of blocks of texts – the kind of grey it makes. It helps give a birds-eye view of your composition. It’s helpful to think of text blocks and literally blocks with patterns on them, not letters.

I think I do this so much it’s one of the reasons I’m not a good copy editor at all while I’m designing!

A nice little tool, if you have an iPhone, is Font Combinations app. You man mix and match and recreate some of the examples above and see for yourself why some font combinations work better than others:
