Placing multi-channel artwork in Illustrator CS

I am trying to place (link) a photoshop CS (either .eps or .psd) file that only contains a gray channel and spot channel into Illustrator CS to add other type and labels onto it.

What normally happens is that Illustrator breaks the photoshop file into separate layers for each channel and then does not recognize the correct spot color when printing to separations. It will not let me link the file - it just embeds it.

Any ideas of a work around for this or is this intentional that spot channel artwork will not link into Illustrator?

There are many post in this forum and the photoshop forum discussing the use spot color channels. I recommending searching these forums and reading up on the subject and then reposting any questions you may have.
