Hi guys

just wanted to throw this one at you and see what you think - i have to design some advertising material (poster, banners, flyers, tickets etc) and my client wants a particular style - i've included a link to site to show you an 'example' of the style they want - all i wanted to know was, how you guys would plan to do it - i'd be adding the text later in ID but as for the graphics - PS, AI or hand draw and scan in ? what do you think?

i'm in a rush as usual and not to au fait with illustrator at the moment, so i'm thinking sketch and work over the top in ps?

only thing that worries me is these posters are going to be printed on 6.6ft stands - do you think working at 300-400 res is ok? i'm worried about the images looking pixelated

ok - will stop waffling now - have a look at the website if you can and see what you think - my client is just using this as an example as it's quite modern and
g!rlie and that's the image they need for this work:

i'm sure you geniuses can recognise how this was designed

as always, many thanks for your help - youre great !

For what I can see on the site, all this can be done easily with Illustator (or another vector drawing program). No resolution problems with vectors when blowing up to the banner size.

aww thanks Guy - youre a genius

i had a feeling you'd say it was illustrator - i'm just concerned that i've not got enough time to do it in illustrator as i dont know it as well as ps and it'll take more time

what do you reckon about me drawing freehand and working over the top in ps (without paths)

clutching at straws arent i ? ;o)

(i'm not sure if i've inserted this link correctly - i've never done it before :rolleyes: :o )

if this links properly and you can see the image guys in the top left corner - am i right in thinking, to get this, the designer would possibly sketch out freehand first (on pc or paper), scan in if on paper then work over the top in illustrator?

yes i know - i always ask dumb questions - but i'm not as bright as you lot remember and that's why i embarrass myself by asking ;o)

It's most definitely Illustrator, right down to the pattern fill in the dress and banding in the gradient background. Actually the pattern in the dress might be an image that is masked, hard to tell.

One concern about blowing up to poster size with Illustrator is that any flaw in your drawing will magnified. The smaller you draw it, the worse it may look when enlarged, not due to pixilation or anything, but just the fact that any wavering or uncertainty of line will blown up in scale for everyone to see. My advice is "work as large as possible." You can see an uncertain waiver in the main girls left shoulder, while it is passable at web banner size, it might very awkward and sloppy at poster size. She shows similar awkwardness in some of hair detail lines. In this day and age of loose digital art standards, no one might notice nor care, but to me they stick out enough at the small size that I would not want to see them blown up in scale.

When tracing, apart from drawing as large as you can handle, use as few points as you possibly can, this will improve your chances of having all lines look as smooth as possible. You could hand draw it, but the same story goes, all your mistakes will be magnified, you will have to work as large as your scanner bed will allow and then the inked lines will have to be perfect, in order to look flawless when enlarged.

In the old days something poster sized would be drawn as large as the person could handle, then enlarged as a photostat as large as their camera would allow, and then the photostat would be drawn directly on to clean up any sloppy or wavering curves, and then again, blown up to poster size.

hey repro ... how are you ? ... good to hear from you !

that's given me a great clear picture - i'm not very quick with AI but i think i'll have to go with it - i think i just wanted confirmation from you experts that this was definetly an AI design - i thought so

the stands are approx 6ft x 3ft

thank you thank you guys !

Mops, Illustrator (at least CS) can go to a document that can be 19 feet x 19 feet.

thanks guy

this is what i'm thinking of doing - how does it sound (honest opinions is fine, i dont get offended by good advice) ...

* sketching out
* scan into illustrator
* work over the top
* place into ID and then add words in ID
* export as a pdf and pass to printer

What do you think?
