Hello Folks,

I am new to this forum, but I plan on being a regular here to help contribute what I can over time as I learn new functions of InDesign.

Although I am coming here from a far away land (web design) and even though layout principles are still the same - InDesign is much different than the counterpart and I need some help....

So instead of creating multiple threads I though I would keep it clean and just compile them in here. I hope this helps... ok... here I go.

Start

I am working on a project for a local physicist - he is writing roughly a 230 pg book on quantum physics. I am responsible for all graphics and page layout.

I use InDesign at work for proposal projects, but nothing major as far as page layout goes so I need some questions answered.

Question 1: Page Numbering

I know how to add page numbers to the Master Page template... I have done that on each facing page (the number on left pages is at the bottom left and the opposite on the right).

They way I have the layout though is this:

12 | Nanocosm | A-2

| | |___ Section Number

| |

| |___________ Section Heading

|

|__________________ Page Number

As you can see from the above diagram I have no problem with the page number, but I don't know how to do sections... I have four sections... them being:

Nanocosm (section A or 1)

Microcosm (section B or 2)

Macrocosm (section C or 3)

Biocosm (section D or 4)

This is just a guess but if each section is a quarter of the book... how can I keep the page numbers intact and put in the section heading without doing it manually - I don't mind typing in the Section number if I have to, but I would like to automate the whole process if possible.

If someone can dispel the mystery of page and section numbering and possible give a quick tutorial on how to achieve my issue that would be awesome.

Question 2: Odd Font Behavior

This I just don't understand... The font the person chose for the book is called Adobe Song Std the only style option for this font is L(?)...

Anyways... it works fine, but if there is an apostrophe used anywhere in the document it comes out like this:

Newton' s

|

|____ denotes space between the apostrophe and the letter s.

If you back space from the s you delete the apostrophe... the only fix I have been doing is to adjust the kerning of the font to -700 where the apostrophe is at.

Has anyone ever hear of this before and is there a fix for this... how about another font identical to Adobe Song Std.

Thanks for anyhelp in advance... :o

Question 1 : use the "Numbering & Section Option" in the fly out menu of the Pages palette (also in the Layout menu).

Question 2 : curious but I thought that "Adobe Song Std" was a Chineese font !? Might be the reason why you have this problem ?

Hi GuyB,

Sorry for the Pun. Couldn't resist.

You're right, Adobe Song is an Asian font, but if you look in the Glyphs palette, the face does have a limited number of Roman chartacters at the top of the palette in InDesign CS2. These characters probably exist to spell English words that may not exist in Chinese. The limitations of these Roman characters is probably causing the strange problems.

My suggestion is to find a similar Roman serif font such as Garamond Premier Pro or possibly a lighter Bodoni. The spacing is sure to be a lot better.

Thank you for all your help... I am going to find a different font... and then read the help file for the part on sections.

Some times clients are crazy i guess... :D

thanks again...

Hi Ace,
Don't be sorry, I always love a good singing pun !

Hi Jim,
My response to your first question was... kind of short! As you said, the online Help of ID (search in the Index at Numbering...) will give you everything you need. I could not have done better than to copy the whole thing here.
