I am having trouble printing to a hp laserjet 5000 postscript printer.

I need to have the file print out with 106lpi and 600dpi, i can choose that setting in the "screening" options under output in the advanced menu when I choose print but the page prints out the same no matter what screening option I use. The dots for the halftone are just too large for the quality i need for offset printing. This works fine when I print out a file from Quark or even files from Illustrator or InDesign. I only have this problem when I open a PDF file in Acrobat and try to print it.

Any ideas?

Lou

I don't have a fix for you, but here's a workaround until you find the solution: Place the PDF in InDesign and print from there, since you said InDesign can do it.

Thanks for the help.

When you say place the file into InDesign do you mean actually use the "File->Place" command? and place it as an object on an indesign page?

If you have a file of 106 lpi then there is no need to have it at 600dpi, is there?

You could easily have your images/file at 200 dpi and get the same result. So perhaps it's because you have your DPI soooo huge when you don't need it.

I know a lot of people think that it should be x2 your lpi but really 1.5 x your lpi is enough to print with. This will also help you keep your file size down, hence faster printing from Adobe. For traditional offset printing 1.5 x lpi is sufficient.

If you're going to be priting 150 lpi halftone screen then you will definitely need more than 230 dpi images, or file etc. If you go above 300dpi for halftone offset printing the resolution is far too smal even for the bionic woman to resolve.

You may need to increase it for stochastic screening, depending but you don't need 600 dpi for printing offset, let alone printing offset at 106 lpi.

Yes, exactly - that places the PDF as a linked graphic and will output correctly for you.
