View Full Version : Animated Dock Icon

I've been updated here at work from CS to CS3 Premium, hmm, weird transition. Normally I'll get newer versions at home first to get familiar with the programs before loading them at work, but this time I'm still on CS2 at home so I wasn't as ready here at work as I'd like. Anyway, here is the first in what may be several questions for CS3.

With Acrobat, if I fire it up and use it a bit and then switch to another program, it seems as if the Dock animation is triggered the first time I switch out of Acrobat to another program. I open it, do some things, switch to another app, and the damn icon starts jumping up and down in the dock. But when I switch back to Acrobat, it never has anything to say, it just stops jumping.

This is very annoying. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Hi Repro,

Were you online when this happende ? Something similar happened two days ago (but I'm still with CS). Acrobat Pro was open and I was in another app when the Acrobat Icon started jumping in the Dock : it was Acrobat's auto update (I was online) advising me of updates !

GuyB, I'm always online at work. But it's not an updater, it's nothing. It just hops for no reason.

Then we should name this thread the Acrobat's Jolly Jumper bug !

It's more like a Brat that needs attention.

If you click on the "Brat" does it bring up an information window?

That's the entire point of my thread. Nothing happens. It just stops jumping. Then it's usually done for the session. If I quit and then fire it up again, it jumps up and down again after the first time I leave it, then I click on it, and and again nothing happens, it just stops jumping again, for the rest of this new session.

Very annoying.

That sounds very annoying Repro. Haven't gone to CS3 so I have yet to experience the quirks of the situation.

I'm sure there will be plenty.

Hey Repro Kid,

Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I have the exact same issue with the latest version of Acrobat. It has gotten to the point where I don't want to launch Acrobat anymore because of the icon jumping in the dock for no reason.

I promise if I find a solution I'll post it here.

Ah ha ha! Sweet! I have a feeling I am missing something but I can't figure it out. Thanks for your two cents!

I have just realized that if I create a pdf from, for example, an DnDesign document, and carry on working in InDesign, I get a bouncing icon untill I open Acrobat because I have it set to display my pdf, could this be relevant?

Yeah, I have the same issue on the Mac at work. There are a few suggestions on how to fix this in the Adobe Acrobat Macintosh forums.

I tried some of what was suggested and none of it worked. All it seems to be is that if Acrobat isn't the focus of your attention (ie you're in another application) about a minute to two minutes after starting Acrobat up, its icon will start bouncing. If you open Acrobat, and leave it there for a few minutes, you shouldn't have this issue.

Now I am also a victim. Really strange.

I guess I will try the trick you mentioned pdboddy.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but people have reported success with this:

-----
Restart first
Adobe Acrobat 8
Preferences / Documents/
Enable versioncue file management
Re-start Acrobat

Adobe Bridge CS3
Preferences / Startup Scripts/
Disable the Acrobat 8, Adobe Bridge, VersionCue and Start Meeting
(you might find a magic combination with further testing?)

RE-START YOUR WORKSTATION

Launch Acrobat, open a document and then close

Switch to another application

Acrobat does not bounce ....
-----

I will try this tomorrow and let people know here if it works.

It is post 152 (http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?14@@.3bc3c064/152) in the Adobe forums, the link I posted above.

I didn't have to go that far - I usually only use Acrobat to quickly check PDFs I have distilled. Today after the PDF opened I just left it on screen for a couple of minutes with the focus on Acrobat while I took a break. It didn't bounce after that.

hey, I've joined the Jumping Acrobats! We should have a team jacket huh? Have to stop what I'm doing and click on it and then go back to work. Just more workday fun from Adobe.

Hmmm, I have mine set on display too so I can see the PDF after making it.

True - mine happens after Distiller previews a PDF it just created…

pbcThis sounds like the best bet yet. I'll have to try it.

I have the "brat" too. have you found a solution?

I have just given up and go to Acrobat and click on it then go off it to another window and it stops.
I think for me it's because I have it set on display when I create a new PDF instead of just letting it make it and save it, don't know about the others.

The theme was OS uppgrades keeping in sync with software (updates).
these are three places to look:
www.adobe.com/support/downloads
www.adobe.com/support
www.apple.com/support
support.microsoft.com

some software will requre to get latest patches and updates to play well. If you are using older versions of software on newer OS, (eg CS2 or older on an Intel Mac or Vista) you are more likeley to run into problems. Getting an OS patch may in turn need a software patch and vice versa.

Mentioned printing and exporting to PDF as an issue (from CS2) but didn't see anything on bouncing Acrobat…*I get occasional bounces, but only if there is an update or if i ask to view PDF after creation… which is expected.

If you haven't experienced the "Highly Annoying Bouncing Acrobat Icon," consider your self lucky!
