I would like to import Adobe PDF files into Illustrator CS3 and preserve text as editable text, even when fonts are missing and will be substituted. In Illustrator CS3, I'm having trouble locating the correct command or sequence to do this. Each time I import or paste, all text is converted to individual objects. Thanks for your reply.

More than likely the text was converted to outlines prior to the PDF being created in the first place, Or was done so as part of the PDF making process.

I have zero issues getting text objects from pdf documents when opening in Illustrator as long as the text objects are actualy text.

Inasmuch that some of the files were originally created in Micrografx Designer (now owned by Corel,) and then exported to PDF, that may be the case. I'll go experiment and see what happens. The only remaining curiosity I have with this though is that I get a message telling me the computer cannot find the original (Times Roman) font and will substitute during the conversion. Doesn't this suggest that Illustrator was finding text? At any rate, thanks for your reply, I do appreciate it.

This probably won't make a difference, but FYI, you do not need to import PDFs into Illustrator. Just open the PDF directly with Illustrator.

Hi cpo1,

No, not neccessarily. Times Roman may be the default face in the program that created the PDF, so it may be included automatically. The rest of the fonts may have been converted to outline to preserve their appearance in the Acrobat.
