Compund path & clipart

I have a piece of clipart that I would like to change and simplify. It is created as a compound path. I release the compound path and it reflects as being a path in the appearance pallet. I can change the fill and stroke attributes of the object, but I am unable to "break it apart" for changing and simplifying.

Not sure if I can visualize what you want to do, but Object>Path>Outline Stroke will make the stroke and editable shape, if that's what you need.

It could also have been created as series of groups and/or grouped compounded paths. Begin by Un-grouping objects first, then begin releasing compounds paths if you still need to. You can always manipulate the pieces of compound paths with the direct selection tool without having to release the compound path.
