Hi, I'm new to the forum and to illustrator. I want to try do a vector version of the gif image I have attached but dont know how. I have tried a live trace but the results are not acceptable.

I would be delighted if someone could explain how this effect is created in illustrator.

Cheers

Make a bunch of circles, alternating the fill colors red/white/red...

Select all and then choose Effect>3D>Rotate.

Play with the settings until you get results desired

Once you are happy, you can use Object>Expand Appearance to create vectors instead of having a live effect.

Simple. Whenever you have something you want to have at a funky angle, it is often easier to make flat, and then use the rotate effect to distort. The results look realistic and is far easier (especially when using type) than trying to draw that way.
