Envelope Distort

I created a grayscale version of the following image and would like to make a color version. I used object /envelope distort/make with mesh and tweaked the text to the leaf shape. It's not just one image I would like to colorize but many, all made with the Envelope Distort.
I didn't know at the outset that I would be creating a color version.
Was there another way of creating this image for color flexiblity and/or is there a way to colorize it?

Object>Envelopte Distort>Edit Contents

The Envelope Object in the layers palette will expand, you will be able to select the contents and edit as necessary.
