Every once in while I'll get a paragraph that has a rogue last line. It seems that the last line in the paragraph pulls away from the rest of the paragraph when I start a new paragraph. This is extremely annoying. Do any have an idea how to correct this issue? Thank you!

Yes, it's mainly because InDesign treats leading as a character attribute, not a paragraph attribute. Select your entire paragraph including the "invisible" carriage return at the end of the paragraph, and then assign your leading value. That should do the trick.

Oh gosh! That makes sense but not so obvious. Thank you so much, it worked out.

Hi eclipse525,
If you save your various kinds of formatting (copy, headline, subhead) as Paragraph Styles this problem will not happen at all. I you click in any part of a paragraph and apply a Paragraph Style, the same exact formatting will apply to the entire Paragraph.

I actually did have a Paragraph style attached to it but it still happen. The strange thing is that I even check to see if the style was altered (+) but it wasn't.

That's just it, Leading is a character attribute in InDesign, although you can change it to be a Paragraph attribute in the Prefs, I leave it as a character attribute as I don't like to over customize programs, I like them to remain the way most people use them.

Hi eclipse525,
Was there a Character Style applied to the last line? It wouldn't show up as a + next to the Paragraph Style name. Yet it could be altering the Leading.
Or was this a file that was converted from Quark? I've seen some goofy translations of Quark Style Sheets.

There wasn't any character styles in this particular paragraph. In fact i did have other paragraphs with that style attached to it and they turned out fine. Could be that the Character style was set somewhere towards the beginning of the paragraph but all it in all was fine. Although the issue was resolved by "Repro Kid's" advice, it still sort of bugging me as to how and why it happened.

I often get this problem, but I do quite a lot of cut and paste, and you know if you select text then paste in new text and you have the para return selected then you get the next para's style, causes all kinds of problems. I get the "funny" leading but it stil reads the same in the character box (14 pt) so I click leading up one pt then down one pt.
But try setting your prefs so that leading affects entire paragraph

Well, I think we're straying beyond the scope of Eclipse's question but yes, copying the Carriage return can cause lots of problems. But the whole leading issue (and eclipse's question) really comes down to selecting the entire paragraph when applying leading, and many times people don't realize that the invisible Carriage return at the end of the paragraph is part of the paragraph and must be selected as well. (Actually many people don't even realize the invisibles are there at all.) Clicking four times in the paragraph selects the whole paragraph without having to be precise, that's what I'll do when things are not selecting properly or are misbehaving. (Or maybe it's click four times in Illustrator and three times for InDesign? Ace will straighten me out on that one:) )
Another thing that helps when dealing with Paragraph styles that are not applying correctly is to go ahead and assign No Style, and then assign the style it should be. This usually straightens out "sticky" paragraph styles.

The problem I have is if I (for example) select the last paragraph in body copy before a Head and include the return when pasting new text, it will take on the style of the head.

I've had this happen even in (Quark) and my quick workaround was to just return it after the last line thereby having a blank line that goes astray. Not a great solution but if you have the room and no time to figure it out, it worked for me.
