View Full Version : Photoshop to Dreamweaver
I am having such a hard time when bringing html saved Photoshop file with slices to Dreamweaver. There are always unwanted lines go across the pages or unintended boxes appear where no slices were made. What I'm doing wrong? To go around this I am using layers which is solving the problem but is there another way to do it right? Any tips? thanks. bigV :(

I have had the same problem bringing Photoshop/ImageReady CS2 slices with html into GoLive! I asked the gurus at the NAPP how I bring the html code into GoLive and they told me to do the slicing in GoLive instead of PS or ImageReady. Which seems to defeat the purpose of slicing in PS.
I don't know Dreamweaver very well, so I don't know if you are able to bring the image(s) into DW and then slice right there. When sliced in an html editor such as DW or GoLive the code is automatically put into the correct areas of the page and should correct those problems.

Hi, I reccommend doing the following:
1) create the layout in PS
2) export the JPG out of PS containing your layout
3) import the JPG into FW
4) slice the JPG in FW
5) export to DW
NOTE: You can also import a PSD file into FW. Cut it and export it to DW.
Finally, the following link may be of interest to you:

Good luck,

You're not doing anything wrong and I'm sure Photoshop (PS) isn't either. There are two kinds of slices: User Slices and Auto Slices.
Every User Slice you create will be identified with a numbered blue symbol and a solid line around the segment. Auto Slices appear as a numbered grey symbol with a dotted outlines. Every User Slice requires balance so PS or IR will create an Auto Slice. For example if you divide an image in half with a User Slice because you want to place navigation elements on the left side of the web page PS/IR will number it Slice 1 (one) and designate the right side of the page as an Auto Slice and automatically number it Slice 2 (two).
You may choose to add interactivity only to Slice 1 and ignore Slice 2. Dreamweaver will ignore Slice 2 also. Even though Slice 2 and it's dotted outline border appears as a box in your Dreamweaver layout, it won't show up in your final html web page. So ignore all Auto Slice segments because Dreamweaver will.
I have had good success with slices and their use lends itself well to certain types of graphical layouts, especially for images that are easily divided up with straight lines. For example navigational buttons laid out horizontally or vertically across a page. But for graphic layouts containing curves and circular graphical elements, you are better off using Image Maps instead of Slices.
The only advantage that I can see (with my limited knowledge of html) in using Slices as opposed to Image Maps, is that User-based Slices can be optimized individually according to graphical content. In other words, when you're trying to keep the file size small, slicing a solid black graphic and saving it as a GIF-32 No Dither, results in a very small slice segment which loads really fast. Saving that same slice as a JPG will result in a segment that is three times the size of a GIF-Based segment and will take longer to load.
I think of slices as rigid and inflexible segments, that work great for things like boxes and graphics with straight lines, whereas Image Maps that are created using the Polygon tool are free-form and can be wrapped around an image and can used to create "hot spots" anywhere on a web page.
I hope what I've written makes sense. If not, don't give up and continue to study the matter. When I first started experimenting with Slices I didn't know jack about them but I slogged through it and now it's easy as pie. :)
