I took a drive to the beach today to take a walk. The weather has gotten real nice agin, shorts weather today. It's possible for me to drive straight up the Palos Verdes Peninsula, or the "the Hill", and take the scenic route to the beach, so that's what I did today. I was fascinated by ldrain's photo from a moving car and so I included some car-view shots on the way — don't try that at home kids.

Looking towards the beach from the parking lot. Angeles Crest Mountains in the background. They are closer than they appear, due to the haze.

What a pretty drive/walk. It always amazes me that summer goes on when we take a turn for the winter. That house is scary close to the water. Are all beaches public or does that house own the beach there?

There really are not any private beaches, pertty much anywhere in So Cal, as far as I know, except Portugese Bend on the peninsula south of these pictures. Some Malibu residents (read Steven Speilberg) tried to block public access to beaches in front of their homes but got sued big time by the state. Anyway no houses are allowed to be that close to the beach. That structure was built way back, maybe in the twenties, maybe even a hundred years ago, not sure. It was totally defunct when I was younger, sometime in the past 10 years or more it was renovated into a Country Club or something. It has a lot of history that I'm not too clear on. Maybe it was a house when first built, then maybe it was a bath house later. Then it was defunct for years, and now it's this club thing. That whole neighboring area was known as the Hollywood riviera, although I rarely hear it called that anymore. It got that name back in twenties and thirties when it was popular among that era's hollywood stars but I guess that name isn't really popular now among all the new comer rich types as i never hear it called that anymore.

My great aunt had a house in hollywood riviera, with horse trails in the back, there are (were) also a lot of peacocks and we would collect the feathers on walks. There are still lots of horses up there but I think most of the open public trails have been shut down, by, of course, the new comer rich types, who didn't appreciate the horse droppings in the beautiful, country ranch community they bought houses in. ? they also have gone to war over trying to eradicate the peacocks, I guess the peacocks make too much noise during mating season for the sensitive ears of these people who bought such nice country ranch styles homes, only to have their homes ruined by the nice country style ranch atmosphere. ? Oh yes, and they drop those beautiful feathers everywhere. What a nucense. ? (I have no clue how to spell nusiense and spell check is not helping.)

What a shame, I love peacock calls and find them actually relaxing. They must be an uptight crowd. We have different regulations about beaches here, some lakes are all public access and some are all private access and some are mixed. Just depends on who's jurisdiction the lake is in. I have a private beach that requires membership fees and is only open to a few blocks of neighbors. But it's simply a beach with no boating or structures of any kind. (The one I posted before with the frozen picnic table stuck in the ice)

California Coast is supposed to be a public resource open to all. However, the military bases up and down the coast have some wonderful beaches that are military access only
