Hi All,

Does anyone have any idea why Adobe made the default font Times Roman on the Mac and Times New Roman on a PC? It makes my cross-platform training fun. I recently did some PC InDesign training and had to change all of my materials.

Why didn't they just pick one of the OpenType fonts that comes with Creative Suite as the default?

I think it's a legacy thing Ace, PC systems have used Times New Roman and Arial as the standard proportional Serif and Sans Serif for so long, they are grandfathered in as the default fonts.

Hi Repro,

That's what I thought. It's just like MS Word.

But it's really kind of silly when you think about it. Adobe spent so much time and money partnering with Microsoft to develop OpenType. Then they don't use one of these cross-platform fonts as the default in InDesign. Very strange!

Hi Ace,

You ask why Adobe did that but when you say : «I recently did some PC InDesign training and had to change all of my materials.» it makes me perplex. I guess you should know, but just in case, you know that you can change the defaults so they would be the same on PC and Mac ?

Hi GuyB,

All of my original InDesign training documents were done for Mac based training so there was no issue with Times Roman, which I used in virtually all of my type formatting files. Now that I've started to get more PC training, all of my files with Times Roman needed to be changed. And I used only the OpenType fonts that come with Creative Suite to avoid any issues.

Changing my default font will only work in new documents, so I was stuck changing all my old files.
