Hello:

I am a new user to Indesign. I have been using 'place' to bring graphic images into my layout.

I am able to bring a JPG photograph into the lay out and it's great. However, when I import JPG graphics files, such as symbols I've been noticing the quality of the image is greatly reduced, to the point of looking grainy, and at times the image will come across HUGE in the document.

I am at a loss. Does this description sound familiar to anyones personal difficulties?

Thank you,

John

Your image will be placed at whatever resolution you have it for the jpeg. It only looks fuzzy or low-res because InDesign doesn't place the jpg, it makes a low resolution preview thumbnail of the image and shows you on screen a visual representation of your layout.

If you go to VIEW>DISPLAY PERFORMANCE>HIGH QUALITY you will see your image in all it's glory.

If you want to save on screen refreshes and memory and be ensured that your image is infact 300dpi then you can to WINDOWS>INFO, click on your image and it will show the ACTUAL PPI (DPI) and the EFFECTIVE PPI (DPI) of the image. The actual PPI is what PPI it is saved as, and the effective PPI shows what PPI the image is after it is placed and scaled. So InDesign will actually compensate PPI for larger size etc.
