Hi Repro,

Have you seen this gadget : a digital camera mask for underwater shooting ! There's a small article here :

Somehow GuyB, I don't expect that device would hold up to any real depth. The product specs don't even list a depth rating. But it might be fun in the Kiddie Pool.

Cali Lewis talks about it on a recent geekbrief. Neat but I will pass.

This is my new rig.

For the time being, I prefer to stick with something more along these lines :D

I know it's only a gimmick ! It was just for fun. In fact, the article says that it can go to 15 feet.

That's quite a rig Repro.

The article was a hoot Guyb:

>Plus, have we mentioned its truly slicktastic styling? I mean, it’s so useful having your camera mounted on your head—so convenient, in fact, that I’m considering wearing this thing all the time, just so potential photo ops don’t escape me. See a celebrity on your lunch hour? Click. Something funny happens at the office? Click. Monkeys start rollerblading down the street? Fire up that video. See? This won’t annoy your friends and loved ones in the slightest. by Dan Moren Jan 2, 2008 3:18 pm

Yeah that was pretty funny. But I'm wondering Macworld actually tested the device to verify it could go 15 feet?

The coolest underwater cheap-o alternative really is the water proof disposable camera. They are rated to 30 feet, and they honestly work pretty good. I've seen people use them before. Although they are rated to 30 feet, I've talked to people that said that they had to ascend to 15 feet to advance the film in between shots because the film would not advance at 30 feet below. Too much squeeze for the film to actually move forward.

But divers do wear stuff on their head. Cave divers wear lanterns on their foreheads just like their land spelunking counterparts, and lobster hunters have small lights they can attach to their mask strap on the side of their head for peering into crevices while keeping both hands read to make a grab.

This shot below shows my older rig. Something like this is much better than what I have now, but is more costly, around $1000, compared to around $300 for my new one. The cost of a new housing was a major factor for what type of new camera I would buy when I bought my Fuji. I really wanted the nikon SLR, but the housing cost was through the roof at around $2500.
