James >> It would be easier to advise you if you attached a visual of your "logo." It would also help to know why you want to outline your logo, what you plan to do with the outline.
Assuming that your logo is made up of multiple shapes and all type has been converted to outlines, try selecting everything and copying it onto its own layer. The Pathfinder>Add to shape>Expand should give you a path that outlines your logo.
Just curious, what were you reading in Adobe support? The problem with Illustrator Help and Acobe support is that you have to know the terminlogy that Adobe uses so you ask the question correctly, or you'll never get your answer. That's why forums are so great… you are talking to real people. Not all of us are experts, but we are all users who will help out when we can.
Anyhow, try out the Pathfinder>Add to shape method for a start. Let us know how it works for you, and if you have questions about the process let us know. Again, posting examples makes it easier to answer many questions.

If you have one shape and you want an outline on the outside you could do it in many ways. In the appearance you can add a stroke under the fill, a thick stroke, and it will outline your logo.
Also you can under object:path:offsett path…
If you have a complex shape you may need to use the pathfider to merge it into one shape.
I think the problem is knowing what to look for.
