I'm sort of new to camera Raw just having gotten a new digital camera but…

ACR or Adobe Camera Raw does recognize a large number of digital camera and their proprietary raw formats. I can open ORF (Olympus Raw Format) directly from Photoshop CS2 and the ,orf file is opened in camera raw. Or if you are using the Crreative Suite 2, and have Bridge open, you can open a file using the file>open in Camera Raw command (Command + R ~ or Alt + R. The one item that may cause this not to work is that you have a camera that hasn't been added to the list of supported cameras. This happened with my Olympus E-500 since it is a very newly released camera to the market. but if that is the case, just a quick trip to Adobe's downloads site and you can upgrade to the latest version of Camera Raw and Dng. dng is Adobe's digital negative software which will convert your camera's proprietary raw format to the .dng (digital negative) format which does have some major advantages.

I hope I helped and didn't deluge you with a ton of information
