I'm going to be heading to Kauai in a few weeks and would love the chance to take some underwater photos. I am not a professional photographer, but I know I won't be able to settle for the little disposable waterproof cameras.

I currently use a EOS Digital Rebel XT and also have an old Power Shot G5 - does anyone know of a reliable housing for either of these? I have never taken under water photos before, and something about using the housing scares the crap out of me - I don't want my beloved friend to get wet! The other trick is that (of course) I don't want to spend a ton of money on it since it won't be something I will use that often.

Any tips/pointers/resources/suggestions would be welcome!

I don't think you will find an inexpensive housing for your Digital Rebel. dSLR housings are expensive. Ikelite makes one for $1400.

Ikelite makes housings for the G7 and G9, but not for the G5. They do have a discontinued housing for the G5, it originally listed for $750. Maybe you can find one on ebay, or contact Ikelite. I'm not really sure why they wanted so much money for this housing. My Ikelite for my FUJI e900 cost $299.

Housings made by quality manufacturers are all safe for your camera, most catastrophic failures are due to operator error. It is important to go over your o-ring seals again and again to make sure they are clean and lubed for a good seal. Not being meticulous in this area is the most common cause of flooding.

I saw some "Bag" housings for the G5, they were around $150.

This is a pretty low-tech option, but it may work. I don't have any experience with Bag type housings.

Thank you so much for all the info. I would of course love the housing for the rebel, but this time around am going to look into the other options you mentioned. I'll do some research on the bag style as well.

Thanks again for the advice and info!
