Man the new Adobe Camera Raw Plug-In is the bomb. What an incredible improvement. I was just sent a photo as a jpeg - requested it in raw format and basically turned it into something usable.

Not my preferable modus operandi - I would much prefer a great shot - but in lieu of that the plug-in got me there.

Amazing.

Yes, I've been getting into it ever since BigPix starting posting. You never can really get the white point of shot correct before shooting, but with camera raw you don't really need to try, you just fix it after it's shot. I think the ability to freely vary your white point really is it's core benefit. A ccd captures all the information, and then throughs out while saving what was not allowed for in the parameters and settings. And I really love all that new Fill Light and stuff. Earlier iterations had less features, CS3's is really deep.

I was told by a really good photographer that I should never set the white point. Just let it set automatically and use the raw plug-in to adjust.

I'll try to post before and after photos from that jpeg at work tomorrow.

I've gotten some nice results by manually setting the white point to a white card before shooting, but when shooting raw format, I don't have to bother with that anymore. Although I still want to try setting the white point manually underwater to a diving slate.

If you've never set the white point manually in that manner, give it a try, it's an important advanced tool with digital cameras. It's a lot like using a twelve step grayscale when scanning. It's also sort of analogous to calibrating your camera to the current surrounding light conditions.
