Hello and Happy New Year to Everyone!

My question: How do I create tiered bullet lists with InDesign CS2?

For example: If I have a bullet point in a WORD document I can go to the next line and TAB. That will create a tabbed bullet point that is tiered beneath the top bullet.

Thanks for the help!

Hi Chris,

Happy New Year to you as well!

Bullets and Numbering were included with the features that Adobe brought in from PageMaker. The easiest way to access them is to go to your Window menu > Pagemaker Toolbar. This will open a palette with popular features from PageMaker. You'll find the Button icon for Bullets in the middle of the palette.

I love the numbering feature because when you delete items in the list, it updates all the other the numbers automatically.

On the other hand, the Bullets feature I find very limited. I rather set up an Indent in the Paragraph palette with a negative First Line Indent (for the Bullet to stick out from the copy). And then save it as a Bullet Paragraph Style.

Hope this helps!

Ace,

I don't have that PageMaker window. Do you know if it's something only in CS2?

Hi Joy,

If you have the "PageMaker Edition" of InDesign CS, the Bullets and Numbering feature from PageMaker were included with the program. There was also something called PageMaker PlugIn Pack that used to be available from Adobe for about $100. I'm not sure if you can still buy it. You'll have to call Adobe Customer Service -- 800-833-6687

Hope this helps!

1. define a character style with a character bullet, if you wish to pull a character out of another font, not necessary if you want to use a standard bullet or numbering option
2. define a paragraph style with a hanging indent, example, left indent the paragraph by 18 points, and set a first line indent of -18 points, if you've chosen another font for the bullet, don't forget to include the character style for the first character under nested styles

there you have a paragraph style for a bulleted list

Even Better -- Take a look at the Bullets and Numbering feature in Options menu of the Paragraph palette. It's allows you to "Nest" bullet styles all in one dialog window without setting up a separate Character Style first. After you set it up, it can be saved as a Paragraph Style. Fast and really powerful!

If you read my earlier post, I thought that the Bullet feature from the PageMaker Tool bar was pretty lame until I stumbled upon these options. (See attached)

That option isn't available in CS1 if the Pagemaker plugin pack isn't there, so if that's the case, a nested style with a hanging first line indent is the best bet.
