For example, if you had a filled blue square on a layer and applied a bevel to it and you did not want the bevel to encompas the entire square, how would you prevent the effect from doing so?

I want to end up with an image like this:

I know I can make a copy of the layer without the layer effect (ctrl-alt-shift-e) and then erase what I dont want, but I was thinking there might be an easier way.

Thanks

Copying the layer and switch of the effect is pretty much the only way (and the fastest) I can think off. The alternative is creating the effect by yourself, but I can assure you that's not an easy option.

Good luck! :)

You could flatten the effect (merge thae layer into a blank layer below it), then just select the area at the top and fill with the blue.

Here’s what to do:
Make figure, duplicate the layer. When you add the effect to the top layer, click on Blending options Default and check Layer Mask Hides Effects.
When you are finished adding style, add a layer mask to the top layer and use any of the tools you want to paint with black in the layer mask.

Hey, that's totally cool. I still don't know my way around the blending options like I should.
