Unable to generate index

I'm trying to generate the index for a 500-page book using InDesign 2.0. After I select the settings I want, it starts the process but freezes up before it gets done processing all the index markers. Does somebody know how to deal with this problem?

I cant comment about ID2 as I am using IDCS. However it does take a lot of memory to generate the index at least in my case as our catalogs are now 500+ pages with over 20,000 index entries. Perhaps that's where your problem lies?

A far less than perfect solution would be to break your book into smaller portions & index seperately, manually combining the indexes later but this will require a lot of work on your part. You can probably combine each of the indexes into a spreadsheet or wordprocessing program (word or excel in my case) for sorting but even then that will leave you with page numbers & duplicate entries to clean up. Other than that I dont know what else you could do.
