Hi "The Repro Kid",

The new iMac G5 is really very cool. I have been using Macs since 1994. This new iMac is quite remarkable. I recently bought this iMac. The design and performance is very good. I use Adobe CS2 on this, with built-in 512MB RAM the speed is quite good, coz I haven't handled huge Photoshop images yet. The slot loading super drive is cool. The only problem I faced was, a DVD movie disc was not loading, for whatever reason, it did work on my Sony DVD Player, so no fault with the disc...else the machine is cool. Forgot to mention about the iSight built-in camera, it has Photobooth as supporting software, the resolution of the images caught in iSight is not very good. But it is fun to use it.

regards,

Srik

Heads up,
that's cool,
and all that...

but...

Not.

I'm talking about the New, Dual-Core, Intel iMac.

Have a look. (MacWorld Keynote Address was this morning, remember?)

Cheers!

Sorry, got just carried away with my new buy. I just saw the description on the net for Intel dual processor driven iMac, sounds pretty fast...if at all I could upgrade to the new processor...

Ok, completed cited from www.whereisben.com the blog of Ben Wilmore, but I think that it's relevant to this thread.

Great Stuff:

Much faster then Powerbook
Much brighter screen than Powerbook
Built-in iSight Camera
Includes Front Row with remote that can be used to control presentations
Can burn to both DVD + and - R's
New power adaptor (all mine have mangled ends)

Bad Stuff:

No FireWire 800 support
No PC card slot, so you need a card reader for Compact Flash cards
No modem (can't fax or connect to net in some hotels)
Lower resolution screen (60 fewer pixels in the hight compared to 15" Powerbook)

Stuff to Think About:

They replaced the PC Card slot with a smaller Express Card slot (don't know of any available accessories for this slot yet and it's too small to fit Compact Flash cards from my digital camera)

They just happened to forget to list the estimated battery life on the units
You should be able to boot into either Mac OS or Windows OS!

I would not purchase one of the first units released because they have not been tested by a wide enough audience yet (heck most developers didn't even know about them). I'd end up waiting at least 6 months for them to work the kinks out and check all the on-line reports because doing any critical work on these new machines.

As far as the screen, 60 fewer in height relates to the new wider screen aspects in use today, and the Macbook's screen is as bright as a Cinema display, which must look amazing. Some of these bloggers just want to sound important and really aren't that technically oriented -- the screen is supposed to be most impressive.

And as far as the modem, don't most hotels have ethernet net, with high speed connections? I don't know I'm not a hotel hopper.

I would think that the biggest concern for those of us on this board would be that photoshop runs on rosetta, which probably won't be acceptable for real photoshop work. (Quark 7 release will be native.)

Still, if Photoshop can get native this all looks very interesting. And if anyone uses 3D apps, the FPU gains on these dual-core iNtell chips is enormous. I wonder when Strata will get native?

I've never owned a 'book, though.
