New Layer

I have been stumped trying to find a keyboard shortcut to create a new layer in Illustrator. Is there one? Is there a way to set one?

I don't think so. you could create an action. this would allow you to name it a certain name as well.

yes, control + L (capital letter isn't required) pc
Apple + L mac

I set mine up to mimic Photoshop.

Edit > Keyboard shortcuts > Menu Commands > Other Panel > New Layer and set it to Command-Shift-N (PC:Ctrl-Shift-N).

That way in either app it's the same. I don't know why Adobe doesn't do stuff like this by default.
