Hi,

I have a nice picture of my daughter and I want to remove the background leaving my girl with transparent so I can move her into a better background picture.

In photoshop, I can do this by selecting and deleting, but I can't seem to find any good tutorial on doing this in Illustrator CS2.

Any help with simple instructions would be GREAT!!!

Thanks in advance.

Ciao!

I would help you if I could but I don't really understand what you want.... Would you please write the problem more detailed!
The picture that you are talkin' about is a vector graphic in Illustrator?

Sorry, maybe unclear.

I have a digital picture "jpg format" of my kid that I will open in Illustrator and want to remove only the background of the picture making it transparent leaving my daughter as the only image. - hope this is clear.

I can do this in Photoshop, but I don't have the software anymore. errr. Illustrator is WEAK with photo's!

Thanks for your response.

Well...I think you should use a clipping mask. This allows you to see just certain parts of the image. If this is the case, you can do it the following way:

1 First create a new file.

2 Go to File/Place and place the photo.

3 Lock the layer and on a new layer with the pen tool draw the shape around your child - so draw a shape that will show you the visible part of the photo.

4 Unlock the layer and with both shapes selected right-click and choose Make Clipping Mask.

This way you will only see that part of the photo that is under your shape.

Did you mean this?

That's correct. I only want to see my girl without the background.

Let me try this and let you know how it goes. thank you for your help, very much appreciated.

How do I make the background transparent instead of a white background?

Select only the clipping mask and then choose no fill in the toolbar. But by default, when you create a clipping path it's fill is set to none. So there should be no problem about it....
Let me know it if you got it right!:)

Thank you! I had to save the picture as gif or png, then do Clipping Mask, it worked like a charm. I searched all over the WEB for this type of help and found it here!

Have a great Thanksgiving Holiday!

If it were me, I would explore the use of an Opacity mask. You can create the mask as you would a clipping mask, but you more options with an Opacity Mask. For example, you can soften the edges with feather or blur and get a less harsh edge.
