I love the fact that I'm learning to create art in Illustrator, simply because a lot of what I produce needs to be in vector format. However, I miss the sweet Photoshop filters I'm used to applying to text, specifically bevelling and embossing and satin/metallic filters.

Sniff! :(

Illustrator does have a bevel/emboss tool but I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how to apply it to text (outlines - I did get that far). The text looks extremely distorted compared to simple artwork (squares, circles) I've applied the bevel/emboss to. I can't get close to the look I got in Photoshop.

Can anyone suggest some tutorials on learning how to create three-dimensional text?

Upload an example of what you would like to acheive and you will probably get some tips on how to do it.

Attached is an example of what you can do with the appearance palette...

Thanks - the samples you attached are exactly the type of effect I'm looking for. Any suggestions on learning how to do that? I just don't know where to start. Maybe because I'm still so unfamiliar with the drawing capabilities of Illustrator.

The idea in illustrator to create "Cool" text effect is by combining multiple fill/stoke and transparency/effect setting to a single text. AICS2, come with a bunch of Graphic Style for text effect.

In the Option of Graphic Style Palette, do "open graphic style library" and load the "text effects". Type a few word and apply some of them. To understand and learn how theses effects are constructed, take a look at the Appearance palette.
