Gradient are not allowed in brushstroke... But you can do that.

1) Draw a rectangle 4 in x 0.5 in, fill it with a rainbow gradient, no stroke
2) Select your gradient, go to Object > Expand and expand the fill to 256 objects.
3) This command will create a mask at the boundary of the gradient, so you need to select it and delete it.
4) Now select the result and drag it to the Brushes Palette, and choose New Art Brushes

Their you go... a rainbow brushes.

Thank you for your reply. I'm having problems with step 3. How do delete that boundary?

Thx,

If you have difficulty selecting it, use the Select > Object > Clipping Mask command. This will select it for you. Then delete...

When you expand your gradient, make sure you don’t use Expand to Gradient MEsh, but to Specify 256 Objects.

Can you attach the file with the gradient not expanded and expanded in it. I’ll take a look at it.

Another thought you might try--create your artwork with the brushes of your choice, then select the brush strokes and choose Object>Expand Appearance. Now the brush stokes are shapes that can be filled with a gradient swatch. The strokes are not editable after that, so you might want to make a copy of them on a separate layer.

I have done this and the on;y problem what you get with this is that you have a fill but not the stroke in a gradient. The result of this is like this (http://home.tiscali.nl/sponzert/Screenshot_1.png). The solution i need is that i can have the gradient on the stroke and not the fill.
I really hope someone can help me out with this. Thank you all for thinking with me.:)

Maybe a stupid question, but is it possible to make a brush with a gradient and then save it. Maybe you can make the brush i want and mail it to me or any other way. This sounds like I'm trying to let you do the work for me, but believe me thats not the case here. I really would like to now how to make a gradient-brush from any kind of brush thats in the brushes-pallet in Illustrator. There must be a way i think....but what is the right direction???

But, what do you really want?

a) a Brushes that ISa gradient, or
b) a way to apply a gradient to any Brushes

Here's what I was suggesting:http://static.flickr.com/109/316614898_43565e13d3.jpg?v=0

The brush is not editable as a brush anymore, but that will give you the look you want.

Ok, I see what you want....

It’s not obvious but it is working...

Follow theses Steps carefully:

1) Draw a brushes strokes with any of the brushes
2) In the Appearance Palette, select the stroke then,
3) In the effect Menu add a Path > Outline Stroke Effect
4) Then Group the single brushes,
5) in the appearance palette, add a new Fill and move it above the "Content"
6) Choose your gradient for that fill
7) with that gradient fill still seletec you can use the gradient tool to reposition it the way you want.

I have noticed a problems with that, and it's probably a bug because as soon as you edit the brush path in any way, you are loosing the effect. The effect cannot be save and reapply as a Graphic Style either.

Another method would have been to Expand the brush, select the spine and delete it, then create a compound Path then fill it with your gradient.

Hope this help..

That last option did the trick. Fast and you can do more. Trow an effect over the brush, no problemo. :) Click (http://home.tiscali.nl/sponzert/brush2.gif). Thank you all for all the help. ;)
