I have an iPod shuffle that I am using with a Windows XP (home) system. I installed the iPod software as well as iTunes and have been using it without drama for a couple of weeks.
Today, it will simply not connect. Windows XP and iTunes does not recognize the device irrespective of which USB port I use. I've reset it according to the user guide and it still couldn't be seen. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled iPod updater and iTunes. The problem persists.
I did some forum searches and it does, indeed, seem to be a very wide-spread problem. Sadly, I've not found any suggestions that I've not already tried.
If anyone has a clue, I'd certainly appreciate hearing from you.
PS: I've not changed any settings or added any other software on the Windows XP machine.

Worse case.... you might need to return it to Apple.... or if you have an Apple store near you take it to the Genius Bar. They should be able to sort you out, or replace it if needed. Good luck sorry to hear you are having problems.

Thanks for the reply. I actually found that this is a common problem when using an iPod with a Dell PC. For some reason, the front USB ports do not allow the iPod to seat correctly. So, I've got the dock and am having no further troubles.

I've seen several messages regarding an iPod not working with a Dell computer. I've got 3 iPod Video guys and they all work OK. However, I bought an iPod Shuffle to use while jogging but it didn't work at first with my computer. I have a Dell Dimenision 8400 running XP Professional SP2. It would NOT recognize the Shuffle. Apple actually replaced my Shuffle within 24 hours after I called technical support, but the second one didn't work either. I happened to find another thread on the internet which indicated that Shuffles didn't seat properly in the Dell USB ports. The solution was to use a Shuffle docking station. I didn't have a docking station but I did have a separate USB hub and so I tried plugging the Shuffle into that and it works OK now.

I had the same problem. I took the Shuffle to the Apple 'Genius' and it worked fine on the Mac and on 2 Windows machines in the store. Brought it back home and did not work on the Dell XPS M140 laptop. I disabled the USB port using the device manager and re-enabled and it worked! Seems like some weird power supply problem, but for now I have a workaround.

I have a Dell Precision M70 Laptop, I've had a Shuffle for a year now, it's worked absolutley fine, until now...
It's just completely stopped working with my computer...
No idea why? Anyone any clues?
I've read through the other comments; about Dell problems with the Shuffle, but why would it stop working like this? Weird.
Can anyone help?

Howdy, Colin. Have you tried resetting your shuffle? Turning it off and leaving it off for a minute or so might help.
Also, does the shuffle play when not connected to the computer and/or have you tried getting connectivity on another machine?
You may want to update iTunes and the iPod utilities and try again.
Why Dells and shuffles don't play nicely together is a mystery to me, but it does seem to be the case.
Best of luck. :)

I also have a shuffle which was working fine and now will not take a charge, won't connect to computer and bought a docking station and will not charge from there either. It is only a year old, any suggestions do the batteries need to ever be replaced? Any help would be appreciated....
