Is there a plug-in for Illustrator to digitize an image and export it out to a .dst file for embroidery?

I need to convert my client's logo to a .dst file to have their logo embroidered on some polo shirts.

Or do you recommend any other software that can do that?

No, there isn't that I know of and I wish it were so easy. There is software you can buy. Expect to spend $5-20,000 for software for embroidery and most are PC based. Best thing is to send it to a quality embroidery house and let them do it.

I've digitized about 20,000 embroideries and can tell you any good embroidey is made with quality software by quality digitizers.

I'm in search for this plugin too, however corel created a software called drawings at a modest 1200.00 from here you can create files in illustrator and then go thru corel which converts to dst files. the only other source of info is a company called punto, but I think it's a costly solution.

My parents, now that they are "retiring" have started an embroidery business. They bought CorelDRAWings, took one look at it and sent it my way. Now I do all their custom pattern conversions for them. There are too many variables and adjustments for an embroidery file for it to effectively be a plugin for illustrator, but I do wish it were out there.

I will say that now that we have done hundreds of designs and have a good idea how settings effect the embroidery patterns, and which ones work for which fabrics and such, that our custom made patterns blow the pre-bought patterns away. The difference in qulaity alone has really driven business to the point where it is beyond my parents being able to keep up with the time that they have allotted so far. Both good and bad. Enough that they are converting the basement to accomodate a second 4-head machine (this will be thier 5th machine.

So the $1000 cost for CorelDRAWings was worth it for them.

If you only need a couple of custom patterns, send them out. But if you are doing this for a business, spend the $$$ at least for an entry level program like DRAWings.

Hirsch Int. is coming out with a plug-in that will convert vector images to embroidery files. The program is called Embroidery I2 for Adobe Illustrator. The program has not been released yet but if you go to http://www.embroideryi2.com/ you can find a video clip of what it can do and a pdf showing some of the features. My guess is that it will be expensive to purchase but it may be worth it.
