As a hack I am looking for advice on what I should get for my 20D. I like to shoot landscapes and portraits.

Since you're looking to do both landscapes (where you'll probably want a super wide angle, like a 17mm), and portraits (where you'll want around a 80-100mm), take a look at Canon's 17-85mm zoom, which covers both.

Here's the lens I mentioned at B&H Photo (where I get all my stuff):

Hope that helps.

you might also check the 17-40 L at b&h. It goes for just under $700.

This is the best glass for landscapes: http://tinyurl.com/cbzsl If you are a new hobbyist, this lens might be difficult to master.

Prime lenses will give you cleaner shots and are less expensive. Zoom are usually lesser quality and cost more.

Ebay is a very legit place to shop for glass.

You can get very good zoom lenses with glass just as good as a fixed focal length lens. Fixed focal length lenses tend to cost more than zooms - they tend to be faster lenses. If you're talking Canon - you can get good quality 3rd party lenses from Tokina and Tamron that are just as good as Canon's average lenses. To get Canon's good stuff, you've got to buy their "L" series glass - which is top notch, but has the price tag to go with it.

I'm in mind to agree with Scott; unless you are planing to do professional stuff then you might want to look at prime lenses. Everybody is going to have an opinion. The best option is to find a local shop that does rentals and see if you can rent the lenses. This way you can see what will be best for you in the long run. For me it is all "L" glass from Canon.
