Seems I recall somewhere, that if you selected a group of paths (not necessarily grouped), there was a feature with Illustrator that said that "X amount of paths were selected."

I've searched the documentation, and perhaps I'm not using the right search string. If you have any information you'd like to share, I'd appreciate it.

In CS, look at the "Document info" palette. In the pull-down menu, choose "objects". With the "Selection only" checked, you will have what you want : the number of paths selected and the number of points (and more !).
