This might seem like a dumb question, but I can't seem to find a way to get an emboss effect in illustrator. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

try using some of the type styles that come with illustrator. If one of those doesn't work, look through the rest of the styles illustrator gives. I find some of them work well and they are quick and easy.

Have you tried using Effect>3D>extrude and Bevel

I have tried that, but for some reason can't get it to have the look that I need. Thanks for the help anyway.
oh yes:
1. play with extrude and bevel
2. and also go through the 3D style presets that come with illustrator (check adobe exchange and the web for more), you can go to the appearance palette and double click the extrude and bevel effect and do some tweaking if the style is almost there, but not quite
3. and if you come across something interesting, save a new style preset and continue, and even if you don't save the style, if you're looking for effects on a character or option, run a whole series of objects, because when you save the file, the data for that particular extrude and bevel effect is saved in the file
