OK, This might be a crazy question, but in PS CS2, when you create a new file, a dialogue box pops up and it asks you for the resolution. I've noticed Illustrator doesn't give that option. Is there any way to set the resolution in Illustrator? If not, does anyone know what the default setting is?

The reason for this is that it isn't needed. Vectors are resolution independent... meaning that they scale up or down infinitely. Resolution is only a problem with something finite like raster images... aka pixels. There are settings in your preferences for what to do about resolution when rasterizing images, but as far as creating an illustration directly in Illustrator... resolution really doesn't enter into it.

.... however... if you are placing images such as psd files or tiffs into Illustrator you want to check your Document Raster Effects Settings in the Effects menu. Be certain that item is set accordingly before saving or printing the file.

Scott,

I just want to clarify. The Document Raster Effects setting only applies to the effects you are using, not the images you place or embed. Is that right?

When embedding images in Illustrator, the resolution is determined by the image. This resolution reported by Illustrator under Doc Info depends on what you do to the image after you place it. If you reduce the scales, the resolution increases. And if you rotate it, Illustrator gets confused, or maybe I get confused, cause the resolution reported by Illustrator are a bit strange...

Correct kazbear. I simply always prefer to set any print piece at 300 for the Document Effects Raster Settings. To to ensure everything possible is covered.
