Hello everyone,

I have a question. I Saw in a tutorial a trick that allowed you merge all visible layers and still keep all the existing layers in tact. All I can remember is that to do this track you first had to creat a new layer and with a short key combination the new layer is filed with all visible layers.

If anyone out there knows this trick i would really appreciate to hear it.

The reason this trick is so perfect is when I am doing dvd authoring in dvd studio pro I can get the fx layers rasterized into the top layer. and if I need to make changes i just delete the layer redo changes and make the layer again. and I can easily copy the renderd layer to another photoshop file as a sort jpg without exporting and still hold on to the editability of the file.

And that is why this trick is worth gold to all graphic designers. In my opinion.

Thanks in advance to anyone who knows this trick and if i remember it I will be sure to add it to this forum and see if I could get the photoshoptv guys to add it to there episode.

Later.

Hi Jeffrey,

I think you're referring to Copy Merged.

1. Make only the Layers you want Merged visible. (Hide all others.)

2. Select All.

3. Edit > Copy Merged.

4. Activate your top Layer.

5. Paste.

You should have all Layers Merged in a new top Layer with original Layers intact under it.

Hope this helps!

If you have CS 2, you can have all the layers you want to merge visible and hold Shift + Ctrl + Alt and press E. All visible layers are merged on a new layer above the active layer.
In CS, you have to create a new layer, make it active and use the same keys.

Hi Jeffrey, make a new layer, hold down the option key and chooose merge visible. All layers stay intact and your new layer has acopy of all visible layers. Been around for a number of verisions. Great option!

1. Create new layer on top
2. Hold down Alt(opt), Cont., Shift,
3. Press E at the same time. Then you do not have to choose layers, Merge layers. It is done all at once.

Because that is my most used multi-key shortcut (alt, ctrl, sft, and "e") I made it an action and assigned it the F2 function key. F1 is assigned to make a new file from the active layer (usually the F2 I just did), for me that's a good follow-up to in my workflow.
I've learned lots of tidbits like this from other PS users...nice to be able to share a few.
