Is it just me, or does the Cingular commercial with the "IDK my BFF Jill?" girl really annoy anyone else?

I have to change the channel I hate it that much. First, why are you giving a cell phone to a little kid? Why are you allowing her to TXT at all? And if any of my kids EVER talked to me like that (txt lingo OR with that tone) I am going to do a heck of a lot worse than take away the cell phone that they should not have had in the first place. The mom taking the phone away in the end just does not make up for it. She's still stuck with the bill and a little brat of an undisciplined daughter.

People seem to love or hate the commercial, y'all know where I stand.

That commercial really reflects on the way society has gone. Why would a kid that age need a cell anyway? When I hear that commerical I think its like in a foreign language with the shorthand slang in it. Never had that kind of stuff while I was growing up.

As designers, I KNOW everyone has had this happen. The question is:

What word looks the weirdest?

For me, the more I look at the word "Welcome", the less it looks like a word

I guess I'm lucky. Never seen it cuz I don't watch TV for quite a few years now (...not to mention I don't have a cell phone, cable, satellite dish, and I don't wear a watch either). I used to watch TV back when Cheers was popular. Nowadays I just spend time behind my monitor (...but I guess that's equally bad).

I generally do not "Sit" in front of the TV, but the TV is on alot. I like to multitask so the TV is on while I am cooking dinner, cleaning or whatever it is that I am doing. About the only time I sit and give the TV my full attention is during NASCAR. You can not get me away from the TV then. Early in the baseball season I will watch a lot of baseball, but more to watch the umpires as I get back into umpire mode after the fall and winter break.

In the afternoons though, my kids have the TV going and that commercial pops up ALL the time.

I hate cell phones, I hate kids having them even more. I do have one, as does my wife, but we rarely use them. I NEED it during the High School season as games change a lot and the guy who assigns the games needs to be able to get a hold of us 24-7. It serves a purpose during the summer but the rest of the year it goes to waste.

And there are 2 words that have always never looked right to me

Being from the Chicago area, everytime I look in a phonebook or a directory and see Chicago over and over and over, it looks funny to me. I have to double-check that I'm spelling it right after awhile.

Yeah, that Cingular/AT&T commercial does get on my nerves a bit.

But that's nothing compared to the "Head On! Applied directly to the forehead!" ads. I feel like shooting the psycho who came up with that ad scheme. Now they have commercials that acknowledge the fact everyone finds them annoying. However, they up the viewers' anger level further by having two, three, or even four of those product commercials piggy-backed on each other. It's "Head-On," followed by "Active On" and then "First On" and then "Prefer On" and more.

My response to those commercials is "Off On" -applied directly to the mute button.

I really don't care that the ad people are able to make me remember the name of their products. They forget the crucial factor that if they get on my nerves I might refuse to buy their product. I associate their ads with Chinese water torture.

I think a really good commercial would be showing someone getting a headache from watching those Head On ads and then getting a bottle of Bayer Aspirin out of the cabinet.
:)

Back to the Cingular texting kid commercial, that whole thing is a sign of future trends.

Just look at the new font that is being adapted to German highway signs. FF Mt, a specialized version of Meta, drops vowels, lowers cap heights and does a number of other stunts to auto-abbreviate words to conserve space and capitalize and word recognition.

The amazing thing is Font Font believes FF Mt is such an important new development they're offering the font for free to anyone who wants to download it.

I say the same thing everytime I see kids on tv treating their parents like this. Drives me nuts that parents actually let their kids run them like that. Maybe the "spanking" will make a come back someday.

We'll I've never heard of that - but I'm in Canada and I'm held captive by a 3 yr old...LOL - so I see no TV outside the cartoon channel.

This is really a sign of the times. Unfortunately, the Gen X (who now appear to be holding Marketing positions of high calibre) have a sense of humour and common - that is sorely lacking. I find a lot of what I see these days to be highly offensive - that appears to be the brain child of the new generation of 'grown-ups' who haven't gotten past 'potty' humour.

Sad times! And I'm ONLY 42. Alas, but I'm sure the generation before us thought the same thing about us and our ideas :D

This 34 year old with two boys sees it as well.

As for the commercial, I hate it! But I do laugh. Only because I text a lot but I must be getting old because I still type the entire word with proper capitalization and punctuation as well.

Back to the commercial. Seeing how that little girl talks to her mother is pretty typical of how many children talk to their parents. Mine will slip, but then the get the look and they know they better recognize who they are talking to. I think part of it stems from this idea that everyone is your friend. Your teacher is there to help you learn but she/he is your friend. The police officer is your friend. The principle, your mom, you dad..., etc. My kids know, "I am your father, not your friend and you will not talk to me as if I am one of your peers. Nor will you talk to any other adult as a peer."

I sound like my mother!

In all fairness to Cingulair now ATT, the second commercial is much funnier and I actually like it. The sassiness of the girl was toned down, was tempered by the brother and the grandmother. The father stepping in when grandma fulfills the role played by the girl in the first commercial, and the "Not a compliment" comment by the mom establish parental control. This is a much more acceptable scenario from a parental standpoint.
