It's early, but so far NOTHING has gone right today. I came in and my film processor had sprung a leak. A valve leading to the devloper replenisher filters decided to break and developer was everywhere.
I finally get that mess cleaned up, and I get 7... yes 7 jobs returned to me because they decided to change the process and... yadda yadda yadda I have to add this, take away that, basically redo the artwork. Fun.
So I get that done and I go to print the films and (my screw up this time) I print the films for sub-surface printing and when they changed the job, it also went from sub surface, to surface.

I am going to take a break.

US post office allowed 2GB of RAM being mailed by me to be flat out STOLEN from the sealed package it was in. Tape cut.... RAM gone.

It never rains, it pours... Especially in this business...
Torch... I am so glad I will never have to touch chemistry ever again... I feel your pain...
And Scott... That's horrible... Did the USPS also manage to find some way to evade all responsibility, and try to blame you?
Compared to you guys, I just had to deal with a brain-dead designer last night...
Kids, don't try this at home...
File sent in is for a large display (34.75" x 62.75") laid out in InDesign. The major portion of this design is taken up with a fairly simple company logo, just type with a drop shadow, but LARGE (approx. 47" x 14"). Everything looks fine until I check out the ripped file, and the drop shadow looks like it was made out of Lego blocks...
Turns out that the logo was built in Illustrator, including the drop shadow. The designer had left the document raster effects setting on 72 dpi. However, combine this with the fact that it was placed in InDesign at 932% (yes, 932%) and you get an effective res of the drop shadow of about 8 pixels per inch...
And of course if it got to press that way, everyone would want to know why I didn't catch it...

I am just thankful that I do not have to touch it that much. Compared to the last couple of previous jobs, just having a film processor is not all that bad.
And Hex... don't you just LOVE "designers" and I use the term loosely, that do that kind of stuff. I have seen the effects of the 72DPI effects. It's always fun. ("But the file I sent you looked good on my screen") I love people who send you an image file with bevels out the wazoo which would be fine if they specified 4 color process, but then get the quote and then they ask if they can make that 2 spot colors instead...
Seems like common sense is anything but common.
And for the record, much better day today... So far.

So....I got hired on a friday, and the owner had a job due the wednesday before and was so excited that I had the tools to complete it. It took six hours over the weekend but I got it done. I brought it in on Tuesday (monday = holiday) and turned the AI file into eps. His printer wouldnt read my file, so I turned it into every other file I could think of. Still no luck. This took nine hours. He let me go that day. He blamed it on the fact that I have a mac and his printer is programmed to his pc. At $10 an hour for 15 hours he only gave me $100. Now I'm jobless....any one hiring in NE Ohio?

Sorry to hear that. Just curious, a PDF would not print. What the heck kind of printer won't print a PDF?
Anyway. I have to buy a new car. And I am actually buying a NEW car, my first NEW car ever, and I am 35! (got a few hours, I'll tell you how my wife screwed up our credit while I was in the service and the 10 year struggle to finally rebuild it. So quick to destroy, so hard to fix) I am not excited about having a car payment, but I need a reliable mode of transportation. I am also not excited about having to give up buying a motorcycle which I had been saving for.
And not to rub salt in Aimee's fresh wounds... at least I have a really good job.

its one of those huge printers that prints up to 8 feet wide. I guess it needed a contour cut line and when I tried to make one, his program that registers the printer didnt "read it....whatever...

Aimee that can be very discouraging... Why can't these rip programes just print a straight out AI file. Some do I hear but I don;'t have one that does. EPS files are tricky and many rip programes like flexi and wasatch will only read a version 8 eps.
I could give you an example of a bad day also but Aimee I just don't think it could be as bad as yours. Keep you head up and I am sure you will find someone who wants your talent.

The rip I use at work is pretty nice as far as file format goes. It will take a straight AI file, PDF, EPS and any PS file. For best results and the most control, the rip driver generates a PS file, but you can just drag files to a hotfolder if I chose to (I don't)
However, that is about ALL the rip does a good job with. And don't get me started with how bad our imagewriter is... #(#)$_() capstan devices.

I know Mimaki and Roland printers have the contour cut feature and eps files work just fine. That just sounds odd to me.

Hey Torch (and others), how bout this? I work at a sign company and it's family owned (father & son) . The son is on a power trip daily and criticizes everything, demeans me and his giving directions for jobs is lacking. Mind you, neither are designers. There is a bit of a grey area here but the son is such a jagbag.
