Hello!
I am using Illustrator CS 2 for Windows XP. When I try using the screen, lighten, or color dodge mode to blend a black and white gradient, the gradient gets ignored and the entire shape just becomes white, or a solid one color according to color dodge.
Is there a way to fix this? Should it behave this way?

I know things in Illustrator don't like to blend right a lot of times if they are just hovering the artboard. Since it's technically a transparent surface (even though it looks white) you have to check the "simulate paper" check box, or put a white box underneath your object. That's the way it has been for a while, don't know if this has been addressed in later versions or not, but I remember it confusing me on a couple of long nights. heh

This is a common issue. It seems that Illustrator does not like working corretly (on a PC) in CMYK mode.
The issue is most likely that your black and white gradient is a grayscale, and you are trying to blend that in an CMYK document on top of a CMYK color.
Select your object with a gradient and click on one of the colors. In the colors pallett, look at what kind of color you have. If you were using the default balck-white gradient, they are grayscale colors, so convert it to CMYK. Do the same for both colors.
It still does not look right.
Change the document color mode to RGB (It works!) then change it back to CMYK (It still works!) It is almost like it needs to be refreshed.

I change color mode to RGB and that fix it.
Thanks a lot.
