Anyone know of a tutorial on doing the type of flames seen on
automobiles in the 50's and 60's?

Find images of 50s-60s flames, place into illustrator

Trace some of the shapes, Copy and arrange to suit your needs, connect the shapes into a single design.

Color appropriately.

Flames from that era are straightforward to make. A few minutes with the pen tool and you will be all set.

Actually, I found some dingbats on dafonts.com that have the design I need.
