Hi all, maybe this is a question for the newbie section.... but here goes.

I have a multi-layered drawing, and I want to copy one vector from a higher layer, and paste it into a lower layer. I am currently selecting the vector, pressing ctr+x, then choosing the lower layer from the layers palette, then hitting crt+v to paste, but it pastes the vector back into its original layer. What am I doing wrong? How come I cannot place it in a new layer with ctr+v?

Any help would be appreciated

You can.

By what you have written, the copied object should paste in the selected layer.

Which makes me wonder if you are selecting the intended layer. When you say choosing you mean what? When you click on a layer and select it, it should appear highlighted (by being darker than other layers) and your pasted object will be placed on that layer. If you have selected multiple layers, more than one layer will be highlighted, and the pasted object will be placed on the highest selected layer.

By the way CTRL+C is copy, CTRL+X is cut. Copying will create a duplicate of the selection, Cutting will remove the original object.

Hi Torch,

Yes, by choosing I mean that I click on a layer and select it and it appears highlighted, like you said. So, yes, the one layer that I want it to be pasted into is highlighted like it should be. My bad - I meant to say cut, but nonetheless it should still paste into the lower layer whether I cut it or copy it, no?

Cheers,

Probably "Paste remembers layers" is checked on the flyout menu.
The easiest way to copy a vector item to another layer is to select it. In the layers palette you will see a colored box on the right side of the layer. The box represents the selection. Grab the little box, hold down the option (alt) key, and drag it to the layer you want to copy to. If you don't option (alt) drag it, you will move it to the other layer, but when you option (alt) drag you'll see a + sign and a copy will be placed on the other layer.
Copying and pasting will paste in the center of the artboard. This method copies in position, which is usually what you want.
Hope this is what you want.

Micke,

Cheers! This is what was wrong. Thanks for the tips on the alt+drag as well!
