Hi
this is something that has been getting at me, i understand that illustrator works in vectors which enables thing to be enlarged with out distortion by using mathematics not pixels... so here goes i am an amateur photographer and can print large scale images anyhow due to the camera i own, but i want to know if i can put them through illustrator and enlarge them even more without distortion?
Kind Regards

No. Photographs can not be vectorized and still retain their photographic qualities.
I will say that there is a plugin for Photoshop (I do not push plugins very often so take notice) called Alienskin Blow-Up and it does an amazing job at enlarging good quality photographs without killing quality. If you need to push your images bigger it can be of assistance. I used to run a large format professional imaging lab and we used it there when we had to take raster images to poster and banner size. The file sizes were HUGE but the quality was better than relying on the imaging device to scale the image for us, and better than resampling the image in Photoshop.
You can demo it, I suggest doing that and having your stuff printed and doing a comparison so see if it is a viable option for you, and worth the money.

I'm a photographer by trade and this plug-in is a must have if you want to make some really large prints.
Have you tried just printing w/o upsizing the image? You'd be surprised how large you can print w/o seeing obvious image degradation. A pro can see the differences. But that's only since we stare at pictures all day. Just like a pro in here can glance at my meager illustrator work and have it completely disected when it took me a week to make...
If you do decide to use this plug-in. Here's a tip to give you a higher chance of sucess:
Only upsample your image by 10% incriments. So if you want to make your image 50% larger than the original. Upsize your image by 110% five times. Photoshop has a difficult time rendering pixel data when the plug in is pushed further than that and creates artifacts (read ugly mis-colored spots) in your images.
