I just finished outlining a sketch...but then when I select the patch to fill it, I guess I didnt outline it right cuz theres blank spots everywhere. For example I did a hand, and put in all the details in the palm and stuff, and that blocks out other paths. Should I make a path of the basic outline of stuff first and THEN put in the details or what? sorry for the ignorance.
Thanks

A picture is worth a thousand words, and to better help you a screenshot would be nice.
What is going on is that your "outline" is made up up lots of different open paths. Open paths are paths that are not joined end to end. When you apply a fill to an open path the fill fills in the logical area and fills up to an imaginary stright line between the two endpoints. In some cases that is fine, in others like yours it is not.
How to fix it. Well that is a different story and where a screenshot would be nice. Depending on the complexity of the object I may do something differently. One method would be to make the outline one complete closed path, which will have any stroke and fill required, thus filling the space. then the details would be open paths that only have a stroke applied. This works fairly well in a lot of cases.

in case anyone is interested in the whole sketch here it is....I come from a graffitti background...but a combination of too many fumes from spray cans and old age...Im turning to illustrator. (Noone in their 30's should be catching defacing public property charges, lol)

I find it easiest to create 1 master shape that encompasses the entire arm/hand. Then go back and add paths for details.

cool thanx...any tips on getting smoother lines with the pen? also take a look at the face, and suggestions for improvements?

Just practice more with the pen tool. It appears that you've just not dragged bezier handles out far enough to create smooth curves. Especially above his right ear.

yeah...i've spent the last couple hours messing around with (while watching my Boston Red Sox kick butt)....
since im being a pain in the butt...i might as well ask another question:
How can I get one part of a path overlap and object, while another part of the same path stays below it? for the thumb to go under the mushroom.

If this is your first, I think it's pretty darn good!
I just curious about the meaning. Your sketch says "The Road to Enlightenment". So why is he stuffing...what is that, mushroom(?)... into his ear?

Is he stuffing it, or is he listening to it. Speaking from experience (albeit a long time ago) mushrooms can have a lot to say, especially the ones you find in cow pastures with a pre-down purple fuzz on them.
Not bad, not bad at all. And I thought I was doing good when I managed to draw a rectangle.

Well, many old cultures used different psychodelics to enlighten themselves....I know it enlightened me...lol...he's not listening to it...he's already had 3 and is thinking about the fourth....lol

See, if you think about it, you just won't do it. It's one of those fear factor things and you just have to do it.
Not my style but that is OK, I get it, the whole Avatar meets the Rugrats thing, that's cool. Can't offer too much since I do not exactly understand the genre and have no idea what is good, and what isn't.
Better than I could have done just starting out, heck it's probably better than I can do now. I couldn't draw my way out of a box of crayolas. I'm a production guy.

Well, thanks for the reply....I drew the sketch specifically for illustrator, which is why i kept it real simple...He's a recurring character in a lot of my old graf stuff...His name's "Young Boodah" (i know thats not the spelling...) hence the YB chain. He likes guns, drugs, kung fu and easy women..(again, I know there's nothing Buddhist about that...lol) For a while I was working on a book, with illustrations about his adventures (kind of like the old TV show Kung Fu, but with a bit of Natural Born Killers, Kill Bill, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas mixed in. But then reality kinda kicked in, and i found out quickly that my landlord won't let me stay just cause i let him look at my sketches and read my early chapters.
Long story short, anyone familiar with kinda stuff have any suggestions?
PS. Now that Im self employed and a home owner, I have a little more freedom to start working on it again (not to mention a MUCH more demented imagination...lol..thanks to hollywood.
