Hello. This is my first time posting to this forum.

I am trying to create a cylinder with an angled cut through it using the Extrude feature. I have CS3 and would really appreciate any advise.
Please see the attached example of what I am trying to achieve.

Thank-You

P.S I am thinking of subscribing to receive the Illustrator Technique Magazine and would love to hear any feedback as to if it is worth it.

You don't need to extrude.....

It's just a couple of simple shapes, 2 oveals, rotate around Heck you could even revolved the to get the angle PERFECT, and then make the rest of cylinder with a simple shape filled with a gradient.

And you can't subscribe, the mag has gone under.

Hi Stephen,

Draw a Stoked path that looks like a flipped L.

Apply 3D Rotate (Effect>3D Rotate)

Apply a second Effect called Free Distort (Effect>Distort & Transform>Free Distort). Just pull the top right corner of the bounding box down in the Free Distort window a press OK.

See attached.

Hope this helps!

Hi Guys,

In taking a closer look at my suggested solution, it has serious limitations. As soon as you begin to turn the cylinder, the two Effect begin working against each other. The problem is the use of a two-dimensional distortion with a 3D Effect. I managed to get close to the slant of the cylinder in your attached image, but it was a constant struggle avoiding some very odd distortion.

As Torch suggested, you're probably better off just drawing the cylinder.

Ace,
I liked your method of drawing the cylinder with a slanted top, but putting something inside the cylinder, like the bottles in the original attachment, might prove difficult. I guess you could expand the 3-D effects. But just drawing it would be easier.

Hi Mick,

Thanks!

I think I have a solution to getting bottles inside.

Make an copy of the Rotated object (Command+C).

Paste in Front (Command+F)

Reopen 3D Rotate Settings of the front object from Appearance panel.

Change Rotation of the cylinder to just 180°

Sandwich the bottles between the two rotated objects.

See attached.

PS: Are you the same "Micke" that's on the Layers Forum? If so, nice to have another educator around. Welcome! :D
