I apologise if this has been explained before and I'm too blind to see it, but I'm looking for some true newbie help-

-I want to draw a square shape, and about half way down I want to have a zig-zag which seperates the square into two halves

-I then want the top half of the square to be colored blue, and the bottom half red...

what would be the "best" (as in fastest and cleanest) way to do this?

-Create your square, apply stroke only in the color you want the outline of the quare and the zig zag to be.
-Create your zigzag, apply stroke only.
-Select Both paths and choose Object>Path>Outline Stroke.
-With both selected, Alt click the Add button on the Pathfinder Palette
-Select Object>Compound Path>Release Compound Path from the menu bar.
-Look at the Layers Palette. You now have 3 shapes, select the appropriate color fill for the top 2 and you should have the result desired.

Another way.

-Make a square, fill it with one of colors desired for the inside.
-Create your zigzag, make sure it extends beyond the edges of the square.
-Select both and choose Divide from the Pathfinder Palette
-Change the fill color of one of the shapes, and apply a stroke to both shapes in the desired outline color.

There are lots of other ways too depending on the output intended. The second method may seem the easiest, but I like the results in of the first one as the zig zag shape is not overlapped. Keep in mind that I am strokeaphobic and hate having an object with a stroke and a fill.

-With both selected, Alt click the Add button on the Pathfinder Palette

I get a window saying "The filter produced no results. Please select two overlapping paths"

and my paths are overlapping and they're all selected.....

what am I doing wrong?

Are you sure you have them selected?

The only way I get that error is if nothing is selected.
