Control of the Pen tool

How do I control the Pen tool.

I know how to make shapes with the Pen tool, and move the anchors up and down etc. But if I want to move points "in" and "out" without using the anchors how do I do it. Because a "red lined box" stops me from doing it, and moves the box left or right, instead of moving the points when I try to edit them. And I don't have this problem in Photoshop or Freehand.

You can select the anchors individually with the Direct Selection Tool (A). Select the anchor and drag. If you hold the CTRL when the pen tool is selected, then it changes to either the Selection Tool, or the Direct Selection Tool depending on which was used more recently.
