dunno if illustrator will do this, but i'm pretty sure someone has written an "ascii photo filter" which would do this. i'd google for that.

The way I would do that is to create alot of outlines on your portrait. then make alot of brushes with type and use them on those outlines. The technique is pretty simple but to make a good self portrait you need to make use of all different kinds of type (bold, black, italic, condensed, small, large) and know on what places to use them.
If that is what you mean.

Another way to do this is the fill the background with the type or text to be use and then mask it with your image. This way only the type shows through.

Just use the pen-tool (not the pencil tool) and make a contours of your head, your eyes, mouth,etc... and every other detail you want to include. When that's finished make some custom brushes with type, use various kinds of type-brushes. Select a line, go to your brush window and select one of your type-brushes.
If you don't know how to create such a brush it's simple: use the type tool and type whatever you want, next convert that type to outlines (Type - Create Outlines), then drag the selection in the Brush-window and select art-brush.
I had to make something similar in class, if you want to make it look good, it's best to use alot of different kinds of type in lots of different sizes, make alot of brushes and know when and on what places to use them.
Be aware, you must have some knowledge of how to use the pen-tool to make this look good.

Hey all, most of people knows that Mao was a communist leader who is supposed to have massacred thousands of people and have done horrible things to his own people; so why does china still have a portrait hanging over the Forbidden City? And why won't the Chinese government allow the display of art against him? This is a question for my school class but I don't know why they would do that. Does anyone know the answer?
