large format problem

Hi I was wondering if anyone can help me, I'm creating a 5 x 10 ft streamer. I'm trying to place raster 150 dpi graphics in illustrator (in CMYK mode) and for some weird reason it wouldn't take CMYK and would get out of memory pop ups (my RAM is 2Gb, Athlon 3500+, 991Mhz)...that is whether it's just a 29mb jpg file, tiff or psd. BUT it would take an RGB psd even though it is 230 MB! I tried placing the RGB psd file then rasterize to CMYK but would get out-of-memory messages. Is there some reason why it place a large 230 MB layered psd RGB file then not be able to place a smaller jpeg or tiff file in CMYK? Help!

Why would the file be 230 MB in RGB mode and 29 in CMYK (JPEG I can understand since the compression).

My best guess is that your monitor (and computer) works within an RGB colorspace. So when you place a 24 bit RGB image, the computer does not have to translate that in order to output that into your monitor. A placed 32bit CMYK image would need to be equated to RGB in order to be displayed and since you are working big and a 5x10' image @ 150dpi = a 1.3 GB raster image uncompressed.

So I can see the computer choking and putting up the error. May have more to do with VIDEO memory than your system RAM.
