Hi all.

I come bearing gifts, and not of the 'Try-Now Pay-Later' variety, but the 'Free-As-In-Beer' variety.

I've just finished two new interface panels:
Organify2 (http://www.wundes.com/js4ai/organify2.zip) adds a touch of random to your artwork.
ArcTwister (http://www.wundes.com/js4ai/arcTwister.zip) Use this to manipulate control handles in ways you didn't know were possible.

Check my Javascript-4-AI blog (http://js4ai.blogspot.com/) for details...
Post here if you can think of any cool uses. :)

cheers,
-J

Nice gift, John!

Unfortunately they seem completely broken on a Macintosh with Illustrator CS3.

Nice gift, John!

Unfortunately they seem completely broken on a Macintosh with Illustrator CS3.

Thanks for the reply Scott,

I must have screwed something up because I know it's possible to do this cross platform. I'd like to troubleshoot it. Can you tell me what its doing for you?

Otherwise, I'll have to amend my post to CS3 and PC only, which is a pretty small crowd.

No prob.

I drop the two swf files in presets/scripts as instructions note. Place the jsx files on the desktop.

AICS3 is launched and running.

Double click a jsx file (organify2.jsx)

Get the standard message
You are about to run a script in Adobe Illustrator CS3. You should only run scripts from trusted sources. Do you want to run the script? [YES] [NO]

I click "YES."

The Organify panel shows up as expected in AICS3.

Attempt to create a new Document. Nothing happens.

Close Organify panel

Try New Doc again. It works. So new doc (RGB)
draw a circle, black fill no stroke.

Double click organify2.jsx again
Same script warning, click "YES."

Back to AI
Organify panel is open.
with circle selected click any button on the Organify panel

Error:

Adobe Flash Player has stopped a potentially unsafe operation.

The following local application on your computer or network:
/Application/Adobe Illustrator CS3/Presets.localized/.../organify2.swf

is trying to communicate with this internet-enabled location:
<unknown>

To let this application communicate with the internet, click Settings.
You must restart this application after changing your settings.

I was curious so I examined the jsx file. I don't necessarily see anything unscrupulous, but it does send up a red flag.

I click Settings.
For some reason BBEdit is brought forward. may be because I have BBEdit set up to open all .htm files by default. However, BBEdit opens nothing.

If I click OK. The warning goes away but nothing changes and the Organify Panel is dead.

This procedure is identical with both scripts.

Thanks for the thorough response Scott. It looks like you've done everything correctly. I got both sets of warnings as well, and did what you did, but this part interests me...

I click Settings.
For some reason BBEdit is brought forward.
What should have happened is a browser window should have opened allowing you to choose 'safe files or folders' to select for use with Adobe Flash Player. If this did not happen, then perhaps the security settings are still not allowing the communication to happen.

Try this link: (http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager04.html) or google "adobe flash player settings, and select the scripts you want to mark as safe. Hopefully this will allow the files to interact with illustrator.

If that doesn't work, it might be worth a shot to try installing one of the scripts into your scripts folder just to see if that makes a difference.

I think your inability to make a new document might have had to do with the flash panel stealing focus from AI. If you click back on the illustrator app, it should allow you to open documents again.

I apologize for the hiccups, please let me know if any of this makes a difference.
thanks,
-J

Ok, it's not entirely "free-as-in-beer", since apparently installation is a little more work than I had initially hoped.

I've Added an 'installation issues' post to my blog (http://js4ai.blogspot.com/2008/01/flash-panel-installation-issues.html), which I hope covers the installation issues described here by Scott.

Let me know if anyone is still having problems.
