Stroke Issue

I am new to Illustrator. Everytime I increase the stroke to more than 30pts, I get "spikes" all around the text/image.

How do I keep that from happening?

Try adjusting the miter limit either up or down, in the strokes palette

try to set the limit of your pallets or under the stroke set the limit on it...
